Gion Odori runs in Kyoto from Wednesday 4 to Tuesday 10 November, the shortest window to catch one of the city's geiko and maiko dance programmes. In the evenings, the Wonder Night Jingu light walk at Heian Jingū Shrine runs the full week, and Katsuo-ji Temple's autumn light-up is on every night in Osaka.
The weekend widens things considerably. Saturday 7 November brings the Arashiyama Momiji Festival on the Hozu River, the Umekōji Handicrafts Market, and the opening of the Kobe Christmas Market. On Sunday 8, head to Fushimi Inari for the Hitaki Fire Festival, or out to the hills for the Wazuka Tea Festival. The teamLab Cosmos installation in Osaka opens on the 7th and continues through the week.
