Step back in time and into Japan's most famous historic district โ geisha culture, lantern-lit cobbled streets, hidden teahouses, and centuries of tradition still alive after dark.
Gion is Kyoto's geisha quarter โ and the heart of a culture that's been guarded for four centuries. Our local guide walks you through the lantern-lit lanes of Hanami-koji and Pontocho at dusk, when the wooden teahouses begin to glow and the streets fill with the soft sound of shamisen.
You'll learn the difference between maiko and geiko, where the apprentices live and train, and the etiquette every visitor should know (most don't). Most importantly โ how to be a respectful presence in a neighborhood that real people still call home.
